Photographer Jeffrey Chan Illuminates The Life and Food Of Ana Sofia Fehn

Going through her Instagram, Jeffrey was delighted by Ana Sofia’s bubbly personality, passion for cooking, and delectable recipes. Working with C-Heads since 2014, Jeffrey knew they’d love Sofia’s story as much as he did.

Ana Sofia has always loved cooking, having grown up in a large family. She developed her hobby and passion into a career that she never expected. Sofia is always thinking of new recipes to feature on her social media channels.

The Key to Success is Planning Ahead

Jeffrey Chan reached out to Ana Sofia beforehand to gauge her interest in collaborating on a project. When working with subjects like Ana Sofia, it’s very important to Jeffrey that they are on the same page when it comes to developing the vision for the project. This helps him tell their story more accurately.

One important part of pre-planning for Jeffrey is creating a mental checklist of all the aspects he wants to cover. His goal is to capture close-up details, action shots, behind-the-scenes shots, and portraits. Throughout the photoshoot, he likes to take a few moments to recalibrate his creative process.

A Day in the Life of Ana Sofia

The first part of the photoshoot took place at the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market. They spent the morning shopping for groceries and fresh ingredients. This particular market is hosted on multiple days during the week, with Wednesday being the most popular. This is when numerous local restaurants stock up on ingredients for the week. Due to their schedules, Jeffrey Chan and Ana Sofia visited it on Sunday — luckily, a much quieter day at the market.

It was very easy to work with Sofia. She was excited to do the shoot but very focused as well. It was fun to document her process. Since she’s also an actor, she is a natural in front of the camera and projects confidence and charisma. It’s easy to see how she’s become so popular and generated her immense following on social media.

Their two-man team had Ana leading the way through her culinary process, while Jeffrey documented it. He finds that his most successful photoshoots have been when the atmosphere remains relaxed and the talent can simply just do their thing without any excessive pressure. Ana’s process started with some planning, moving on to experimentation, and finally improvisation.

Lasting Impressions

For Jeffrey, every photoshoot is a growth opportunity and learning experience for future projects. At the end of the project, he looked at whether he portrayed Ana Sofia’s story faithfully and if the final edits do justice to the original concept.

The final product was such a success that Jeffrey also used the farmers’ market images as a reference for a project he pitched to a chef and restaurant client. The client wanted a better sense of what the photoshoot would entail. Jeffrey’s work with Ana Sofia was the perfect portfolio piece to showcase his capabilities.

I always love the candid moments that really showcase the subject’s personality — especially when Sofia was in her element or in the moment. I really enjoy taking portraits of engaging people who have a natural presence in front of the camera. People who have an ease in front of the lens. I also love the creativity that goes into their chosen art and passion.
